Underwriting Team Leader

The opportunity

Avencia is partnered with a leading global insurer to support the hire of an Underwriting Team Leader for their Life Science, Technology & Professional Risks team. Based in Leeds city centre (3 days office / 2 days home), this role sits within the renewals department , leading a team focused on existing business across financial lines .

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing underwriting team
• Monitor team performance , workflow, and key targets (e.g. GWP , retention , cross-sell )
• Provide strong broker service , managing renewals and mid-term adjustments
• Identify opportunities for efficiency , growth , and service improvements
• Build relationships across brokers , underwriters , and internal teams
• Attend meetings to share insight on trends and market conditions

Skills & experience

• Proven people management experience within an underwriting environment
• Strong background in Life Science , Technology , or Commercial Lines
• Excellent communication , coaching , and organisational skills
• High level of accuracy , attention to detail, and broker engagement
• ACII or similar qualification preferred
