Mechanical Design Engineer UK-Based, working in a Security-Cleared Environment The Role We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established engineering organisation operating within the heavy engineering sector, seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing multi-disciplinary team. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior to mid-level engineer with a solid foundation in mechanical design and fabrication, looking to develop their career working on complex, real-world engineering projects. You’ll be involved across the full product lifecycle, from early-stage concepts through to detailed design, fabrication, build, and testing, gaining hands-on exposure in a highly technical environment. Key Responsibilities * Produce 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for manufacture * Support the design process from concept through to fabrication and assembly * Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical and buildable * Assist with design reviews, engineering calculations, and technical documentation * Support prototype builds, testing, and commissioning activities * Contribute to problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives * Collaborate with projects, production, and commercial teams * Ensure designs meet quality, cost, and delivery requirements Skills & Experience * Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) * Experience using 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo) * Understanding of manufacturing processes (fabrication, welding, machining) * Exposure to engineering projects (academic or industry) * Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications * Strong problem-solving skills with a practical engineering mindset Desirable: * Knowledge of hydraulics or control systems * Experience supporting build, testing, or workshop activities Important Requirements ⚠️ Must have the right to work in the UK Why Apply? * Work on complex mechanical systems and defence engineering projects * Gain exposure to full lifecycle engineering (design → manufacture → test) * Strong opportunity for career development and progression * Be part of a technically driven, supportive engineering team
