Mechanical Technician – Chemical Manufacturing (Sunderland) A leading chemical manufacturing site in Sunderland is seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join its engineering team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong mechanical expertise, experience in hazardous environments, and a commitment to high safety and operational standards. The Role Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing a wide range of mechanical equipment across the site. You’ll play a key role in ensuring plant reliability, safety, and efficiency, working both independently and alongside the wider engineering team. Key Responsibilities * Carry out maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning of mechanical plant equipment * Ensure all work complies with health, safety, environmental, and statutory requirements * Use CMMS systems to manage, record, and complete maintenance tasks * Diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions * Support planned shutdowns, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives * Work within permit-to-work systems, ensuring proper risk assessments and isolations are in place * Assist with project work, including installation, commissioning, and handover of new equipment * Maintain high housekeeping standards and promote a positive safety culture * Report defects, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly * Support and mentor colleagues where required About You * Proven experience in a mechanical maintenance role within a chemical, process, or heavy industrial environment * Knowledge of hazardous area working practices (CompEx Mechanical preferred) * Ideally experience working under COMAH regulations or similar high-hazard industries * Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation * Experience using CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting * Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation * Proactive, flexible, and able to respond to breakdowns and operational needs What’s on Offer * Competitive salary and benefits package * Opportunity to work in a high-performing, safety-focused environment * Ongoing training and development * Exposure to complex plant systems and engineering projects Additional Information * Flexibility required for overtime, call-outs, and shutdown periods * Involvement in emergency response and incident support as needed
