Environmental Health Officer  (Private Sector Housing) Location: Maidenhead, Berkshire Working Pattern: 3 days per week in office Rate: £55 per hour About the Role We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Environmental Health Officer to take a leading role in delivering private sector housing regulation and enforcement functions. This is a complex and varied position involving criminal investigations, legal case preparation, and enforcement action to improve housing standards and protect tenants’ rights. You will play a key role in driving improvements in resident health, safety, and wellbeing through effective enforcement of housing legislation. Key Responsibilities Manage complex criminal investigations involving multiple offences, including interviewing suspects under caution and handling evidence in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 Prepare detailed reports, witness statements, and legal correspondence Compile prosecution and civil enforcement files in line with relevant procedures, referring cases to Legal Services where appropriate Represent the Council at Magistrates’ Court and Tribunal (Property Chamber) Lead on enforcement of housing standards, including Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and Caravan Site Licensing Investigate and enforce breaches of housing legislation, including the Renters Rights Act 2025 and wider landlord and tenant law Serve statutory notices and orders, make licensing determinations, commission works in default, and prepare prosecution cases Use enforcement powers under the Housing Act 2004 and Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to address poor housing conditions Conduct inspections and licensing of HMOs and other regulated properties Regulate protected mobile home sites through Caravan Site Licensing Investigate complaints, service requests, and long-term empty properties, using both informal and formal enforcement tools About You Have significant experience in housing enforcement, environmental health, or a related field Possess strong knowledge of housing legislation, including the Housing Act 2004 and Renters Rights Act 2025 Be confident managing complex investigations and legal casework Show a strong commitment to improving housing standards and protecting vulnerable residents To find out more information please contact Lily at (url removed) Recruitment is done in line with safe recruitment practices.
