Generator Engineer (Mechanical Engineer)


Generator Engineer (Field Service Mechanical Engineer) Location: UK (National travel required) Travel: Frequent travel & overnight stays required Reporting to: Operations Manager The Role We are seeking an experienced Generator Engineer to support the maintenance, overhaul, and reliability of a fleet of reciprocating gas engine generator assets. This is a field-based role working across the UK on generation facilities ranging from 100kW to 20MWe, with individual units up to 2.5MWe. You will play a key role in ensuring maximum availability, efficiency, and performance of generation assets, working closely with operations and engineering teams. Key Responsibilities Carry out planned maintenance, servicing, and breakdown response on generation assets Lead and support major engine overhauls Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults Replace major components including: Cylinder heads Pistons and liners Turbochargers Pumps and intercoolers Support operations teams with technical guidance and training Conduct emissions monitoring and performance optimisation Assist with recommissioning of overhauled plant Maintain accurate service records, reports, and documentation Manage spares, stock levels, and parts ordering Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards (HSQE) Supervise contractors where required Participate in call-out rota for emergency breakdowns Key Duties Maintenance and repair of: Gas engines Pumps, motors, and auxiliary plant Heat recovery systems Electrical systems (LV, with HV exposure where trained) Fault finding across mechanical, electrical, and control systems Operation of HV switchgear (training provided if required) Implementation of RAMS, permits to work, and safe systems of work Supporting continuous improvement and reducing reliance on external contractors About You Essential Experience Proven experience working on reciprocating engines / power generation equipment Experience leading or supporting engine overhauls in a field-based role Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills Multi-skilled with mechanical and some electrical knowledge Experience working with: MWM / CAT / MTU engines (or similar) Familiarity with control systems (12V DC – 415V AC) Full UK driving licence Desirable Gas Safe certification (or willingness to obtain) Experience with CHP or gas engine systems HV/LV electrical experience Experience in energy, utilities, or industrial environments Personal Attributes Self-motivated and able to work independently Strong problem-solving ability Good organisational and time management skills Flexible and adaptable to changing workloads Confident supervising and supporting others What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-Day Managing your own workload and travel across multiple sites Supporting site teams with technical expertise and escalation support Delivering first-time fixes wherever possible Ensuring assets remain operational, efficient, and compliant Performance Measures Successful completion of engine overhauls and repairs High levels of asset availability and performance Strong fault resolution and first-time fix rates Accurate and detailed record keeping Positive customer and stakeholder feedback The Business The company operates across gas utilisation, power generation, and energy solutions, with a focus on delivering safe, efficient, and high-performing generation assets.
