Powertrain Development Engineer


Powertrain Development Engineer Derbyshire, UK (onsite) £35,000 – £50,000 + benefits This role would suit an experienced graduate engineer or junior engineer with a strong practical aptitude, an interest in product test, development and validation, in conjunction with good analytical / problem solving skills. The company is involved with the design and manufacture of engines (diesel and hydrogen) for various applications. This role sits within the development team and typically involves the following: * Working closely with systems engineering teams to ascertain test requirements, then formulating test processes and methods. * Following test execution and data collation, you will be involved with the analysis and interpretation of the data, problem solving, producing reports. * Finally, you will provide input and guidance back into the product design and development process. The position would ideally suit a graduate with relevant industry experience or a junior test / development or validation engineer that has worked on relevant mechanical systems. This may typically include: Development Engineer * Conventional powertrain, engine, gearboxes or driveline systems development (automotive, marine, off-highway) * Hybrid or electric powertrain systems (e.g. electric drive units (EDU), e-motors, inverters) * Automotive chassis systems (e.g. brakes, suspension, etc) * Or other rugged or durable mechanical systems (e.g. downhole drill / instrumentation for oil & gas, pumps, compressors, aircraft fuel pumps / auxiliary power generators, landing gear, gas turbines, etc). NOTE: This will require practical mechanical skill as you will work on physical engines. It is not a simulation role. Skills / Experience: Development Engineer * Ideally a graduate degree or similar in a relevant subject (e.g., mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, mechatronics, etc) * Good organisational, planning, analytical and communication skills * Experience of failure resolution / problem solving using 8D processes, FMEA, FTA or similar * Understanding and ideally experience of development and validation processes (e.g. DVP) * Experience of the defining, planning and implementing tests and validation methods * Experience of the design, test, development of analysis of engines / powertrain systems or similar. e.g. vehicle transmissions, electric motors / complex electromechanical systems, turbines etc – see above) * Good practical aptitude (evidence of physical mechanical build, test or development) * Able to work effectively in a fast paced, small company environment in conjunction with test technicians * Understanding of a broad range of physical tests (e.g. durability, performance, NVH, pressure, temp) * Good understanding of engine systems (e.g. Major castings, Power conversion, Lubrication system, Cooling system, CCV system, Valve train, Air path, Rotating electrics, Front end accessory drive (FEAD)) The ideal candidate would be an experienced graduate development engineer that has gained direct experience of the test / development of conventional engines or vehicle transmissions, used within the automotive, rail/rolling stock, marine or aerospace industry.
