Health & Safety Director


O'Neill & Brennan are working in partnership with a large, well-established property developer to appoint a Health & Safety Director. This is a key strategic leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape and lead the health and safety agenda across a diverse portfolio of construction, refurbishment, and development projects. Role Purpose The Health & Safety Director will provide strategic leadership and direction for health, safety, and wellbeing across the business. Working in close partnership with the Construction Director, the role will ensure that safety excellence underpins business growth, operational performance, and long-term commercial success. This is a highly visible leadership position, acting as an ambassador and role model for safety, influencing at all levels of the organisation and driving sustainable cultural change. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Collaboration Collaborate with the Construction Director to develop and implement a safety leadership strategy aligned with the company's growth plans and long-term objectives. Embed health and safety as a core business value, supporting safe delivery across construction, refurbishment, and development projects. Provide expert advice and challenge to senior leaders to ensure informed, risk-based decision-making. Governance, Compliance & Assurance Ensure full compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, regulations, and industry standards. Oversee effective systems for reactive compliance monitoring, audits, inspections, and incident investigations. Maintain robust governance, reporting, and assurance frameworks to support board-level oversight. Proactive Safety & Continuous Improvement Balance statutory and reactive requirements with a strong proactive focus, developing leading-edge health and safety initiatives. Drive continuous improvement through the use of data, leading indicators, and performance insights. Champion innovation and best practice to improve safety outcomes and operational efficiency. Operational Performance & Commercial Success Support the business in improving operational efficiency and performance while maintaining the highest safety standards. Ensure health and safety strategies enable, rather than hinder, delivery and commercial objectives. Work collaboratively with project teams to integrate safety into planning, design, procurement, and delivery. Culture, Engagement & Influence Act as a visible and credible role model and ambassador for health and safety across the organisation. Engage, influence, and manage expectations at all levels - from site teams to board members. Lead, mentor, and develop the health and safety function to build capability and succession. Person Specification Essential Experience Minimum of 10 years' experience in a senior health and safety leadership role. Proven experience leading health and safety within construction, refurbishment, and property development projects. Demonstrable track record of driving cultural change and improving safety performance in complex environments. Qualifications & Professional Membership Degree and/or NEBOSH / NCRQ Diploma or NVQ Level 5 (or equivalent). Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).
