Principal Electrical Designer - Building services

Parkinson Gray Associates delivers a proven service to some of the leading Consulting Engineering and Contracting businesses within the British construction industry, predominantly across the Building Services, Energy and Sustainability sectors. We’re working with a leading global engineering consultancy that’s expanding its Electrical Design team in Manchester. They are seeking a Principal Electrical Designer, an experienced professional who delivers technically excellent electrical building services designs, provides mentorship, and contributes to high-profile, complex projects. This is a pure design-focused role with ownership over key systems, but without full Associate-level business development responsibilities. Your work will directly shape the performance, reliability, and innovation of buildings. Salary: £50,000–£65,000 + Bonus Sector: Building Services / MEP Design Consultancy Employment Type: Full-Time – Hybrid / Office-Based What You’ll Do * Lead the technical design of electrical building services systems from concept through detailed design. * Deliver designs across low voltage power distribution, small power, internal and external lighting (including emergency), fire alarm, life safety systems, earthing, and bonding strategies. * Ensure all designs are technically robust, fully coordinated, and compliant with UK standards, BS regulations, and best practice. * Review and mentor junior electrical engineers, supporting technical development and quality across projects. * Collaborate closely with mechanical, public health, BIM, and architectural teams to deliver fully integrated building services solutions. * Support project teams in client workshops, design reviews, and technical discussions. Who You Are * Experienced in consultancy-based electrical building services design, with a track record of delivering complex projects. * Strong technical authority across electrical systems, capable of solving challenging design problems independently. * Confident mentor with experience guiding junior engineers and raising team-wide standards. * Proficient in Revit/BIM and able to work effectively within digital, multidisciplinary workflows. * Knowledgeable of UK building regulations, BS standards, and current best practice. * Collaborative and communicative, able to influence design decisions across project teams. Why This Role Is Unique * Work with a prestigious, globally connected consultancy known for technically innovative, sustainable engineering solutions. * Hands-on, high-profile projects where electrical design directly impacts building performance and occupant experience. * A culture that values technical excellence, problem-solving, and design leadership over simply producing drawings. * Opportunity to mentor junior staff and shape standards within a growing electrical team. What’s on Offer * Competitive salary £50,000–£65,000 + bonus * Hybrid working and flexible hours * Career progression toward Associate/Associate Director level * Exposure to complex, high-profile projects in a supportive, technically driven environment If you’re a highly experienced Electrical Designer ready to step into a Principal-level role, delivering technically excellent solutions and mentoring the next generation of engineers, I’d be happy to speak confidentially
