Night Fitter / Night Maintenance Engineer – Mobile Maintenance Trains (MMTs) Location: Basingstoke (primary), with travel to other locations, including stabling locations, such as Paddock Wood and Horsham Salary: £44,000 per annum + Overtime + Excellent Benefits Hours: 10-hour night shifts 40-hour week Full-time, permanent Shift Pattern: Nights only initially, with an opportunity to move to a mixed days/nights pattern in the future. The Opportunity We are recruiting a Night Fitter / Night Maintenance Engineer to join a long-established rail engineering and maintenance team supporting Mobile Maintenance Trains (MMTs) operating across the UK rail network. This is a low-intensity, standby-focused night role, where you will onboard or attend the train to provide engineering and mechanical cover while it carries out essential track maintenance works. The position offers excellent long-term stability, comprehensive rail training, and a clear pathway into a more hands-on, technically involved engineering role with a salary uplift when the shift pattern evolves in 2026. About the Role: Work night shifts supporting Mobile Maintenance Trains while in service Remain on standby, providing engineering oversight and technical support Respond to mechanical faults or minor maintenance issues if they arise Carry out basic checks, inspections, adjustments, isolations, and minor repairs Ensure machinery is operated correctly and safely at all times Liaise with operators and engineering management when required Accurately complete digital timesheets, logs, and maintenance records Remain with the machine for the duration of the shift From April 2026, receive additional training to move into a more hands-on depot-based engineering role during day shifts Key Responsibilities Maintain operational readiness of Mobile Maintenance Trains Provide mechanical and technical support during night operations Perform minor fault-finding, repairs, and preventative maintenance Ensure compliance with rail safety, quality, and environmental standards Assist with scheduled servicing and depot-based engineering work as the role develops Participate in competence assessments and maintain required certifications Essential Requirements NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Maintenance Engineering Minimum 2 years’ experience in a relevant mechanical or maintenance role Strong mechanical engineering background (essential) Basic understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems IT literate (digital records, logs, and documentation) Full UK driving licence Willingness to work night shifts and transition to mixed shifts in 2026 Able to pass rail medical and drug & alcohol screening Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently Good communication and teamwork skills Training & Development Full rail, technical, and safety training provided Ongoing upskilling and support to gain additional qualifications Clear progression into senior fitter or maintenance technician roles Structured development as the role transitions into more technical day work Salary & Benefits Basic Salary: £44,000 per annum Overtime available Pension scheme – 5% employer contribution 25 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays Life assurance Healthcare cash plan Tools, PPE, and uniform fully provided Stable, permanent employment within the UK rail engineering sector Additional Information Engineers remain with the machine for the duration of each shift Work locations vary depending on train stabling arrangements All staff, including management, transfer with continuity of service Basic DBS checks considered (minor historic convictions may be acceptable) Initial interviews via Teams, followed by face-to-face interviews where required To Apply Please submit your CV via this advert or contact Sam at CV Bay for a confidential discussion about the role. #ENG1
