A number of specialist schools across Hampshire are currently seeking caring, reliable and enthusiastic individuals to work as Special Needs Teaching Assistants (SEN TAs). Positions are available in and around Winchester, Andover, Basingstoke, Farnborough, and Hook. About the Role Special Needs Teaching Assistants play a vital role in supporting pupils with a range of additional needs. Working closely with teachers and other support staff, SEN TAs help pupils access learning, build confidence, and develop key life skills in a safe and nurturing environment. Types of Schools and Needs There are two main types of specialist schools in which these roles are based: SEN (Special Educational Needs) Schools These schools cater for children and young people with a variety of learning needs. Pupils may have: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) Physical disabilities Moderate to severe learning difficulties Communication and interaction difficulties Complex medical needs In these settings, the role often includes supporting learning activities, helping with personal care, using visual and sensory aids, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Schools These schools support children who experience difficulties managing their emotions or behaviour in mainstream settings. Pupils may have diagnoses such as ADHD, attachment disorders, trauma-related needs, or anxiety disorders. In SEMH schools, staff focus on building trust, promoting emotional regulation, and supporting social development. The environment is structured but highly flexible, and a calm, consistent, and resilient approach is essential.
