The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Production/Works Manager to oversee manufacturing operations for a busy metal fabrication business based in Dudley. This is a hands-on leadership role, responsible for the day-to-day management of the workshop, ensuring production targets are met while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
A background in welding and fabrication is essential for this role-ideally with previous experience working as a welder/fabricator in a sheet metal environment. This practical knowledge will enable you to lead the team effectively, support problem-solving on the shop floor, and maintain high technical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage and coordinate all aspects of the production process from planning to dispatch
Lead, motivate, and supervise the workshop team, including fabricators, welders, and general operatives
Plan production schedules to meet customer deadlines and company targets
Monitor production output and quality, implementing improvements where needed
Ensure all work is carried out in line with health and safety regulations and company procedures
Control stock levels of materials and liaise with suppliers where necessary
Manage maintenance schedules for machinery and equipment to minimise downtime
Work closely with senior management and the sales team to plan capacity and resource allocation
Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to drive efficiency and reduce waste
Handle workforce management tasks such as recruitment, training, and performance reviews
Key Skills & Experience Required:
Proven experience in a Production Manager, Works Manager, or similar leadership role within a metal fabrication, engineering, or manufacturing environment
Must have a background in welding and fabrication, ideally in sheet metal
Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, welding (MIG/TIG), and general workshop operations
Good understanding of health & safety and quality standards (ISO desirable)
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Strong people management and leadership abilities
Problem-solving mindset with a hands-on approach
IT literate - comfortable with production planning systems and basic reporting
Forklift and overhead crane knowledge would be an advantage
Hours:
Monday to Friday - 7:30am to 4:30pm (flexibility may be required)
Salary:
Up to ?50,000 per annum (depending on experience)
