Cad Engineer


A position within a large privately owned steel processor and distributor has become available. Reporting to the Cad Manager, this role will be to create nests and program a Multi-Head Flame Cutter and multiple Laser Cutting Machines in accordance with production requirements. 2d parts are processed from steel plates and sheets using laser cutting machines and multi-head flame cutters, in a variety of thicknesses and grades, with subsequent further downstream processing such as press brake forming, plate rolling and drilling. The business function will be to use our advanced Cad/Cam/MRP system to produce production nests of parts in sheets/plates, in date order to suit the production department. Applying appropriate CAM technology to the nests/programs that fully exploit modern manufacturing methods, ensuring a high level of productivity with minimum downtime. Progression within the role, after mastering the programming side, will lead to an expansion of responsibilities that also include using 2d/3d cad systems to produce flat patterns of formed components, and working directly with customers on technical related issues. This will involve using Solidworks to design and/or modify sheet metal type components working from ideas, sketches, paper copy drawings in imperial measurements and reverse engineering components. Depending on the candidate the role could also include estimating new products and producing quotations to assist the sales manager in a Technical Sales position. The business has invested in brand new plant and machinery in order to grow and satisfy both its current and new sales opportunities, and only operates the latest sheet metal processing technology from Trumpf and Bystronic. Full training will be given to the right candidate, however experience in any of the following will be highly advantageous: * Cad/Cam Nesting experience in a laser cutting environment (using Lantek, Sigmanest, Radan, Tops etc.) * 2d cad skills using Autocad or similar. * 3d cad skills using Solidworks or similar. * Basic understanding of CNC machine tools, G/M codes etc - preferable. * Good understanding of steel plate/sheet specifications and grades. * Will be competent at reading/creating sheet-metal type drawings, with a full understanding of the sequence of operations in order to make the part. * Effective communicator, both within the cad/production team and direct with potential & valued current customer base - will already have good customer care skills. * Accuracy and attention to detail in a manufacturing environment – a right 1st time, every time approach. * Work under pressure, and to meet production deadlines. * Ability to inspect and reverse engineer parts, undertaking a quality control function. * A good understanding of IT, networking, file systems, office etc. * Health and Safety best practices in heavy engineering environment - essential.
