Brain Injury Support Worker Newcastle Our reference: NLT/EC/April 24 Location: Newcastle Post available: Brain injury Support Worker Hours: 2 x 20-hour shifts per week, No waking nights required, Part face to face and part remote support/on call during 20 hours shift Salary: £11.46 per hour weekdays, £12.52 per hour weekends, £11.44 per hour remote support/on call, Double time Bank Hols Closing date: TBC Interview date: TBC About the role If you would like to join a friendly team of support workers, then this role is for you. You would be joining an established team who support our client who has a brain injury, in his own home. The team supports our client to live independently in the community and make the most of life. Overnight support provided remotely, and you would be required to be ‘on call’ for this period. Occasionally you may be required to do a sleep in, and you may also be required to support the client to go on holiday. You will be managed by the Team Leader and Case Manager. Client details: Our very sociable client enjoys music, & films, and enjoys doing some voluntary work. He loves cars & generally getting out and about and exploring the coastline and surrounding areas. He plans to take some holidays in the UK and abroad in the coming years. No personal care is required, our client is supported by staff to undertake household tasks and he requires support to access social and leisure activities in the community. You will be required to drive the client’s Motability car. Job Specifications/Description Specifications 1. To work with our client, a man who has a brain injury, in his own home and in the community. 2. To enable him to participate in recreational and leisure activities, both at home and in the community. 3. To work alongside him with some household tasks, like cooking & housework. 4. To act as a driver, using his vehicle mainly locally, and further afield if needed. 5. To provide daytime, evening and overnight support. 6. To have availability enough to offer occasional cover for staff holidays and sickness – which may include weekdays & weekends. 7. To aid and support the client as directed by the Case Manager/Team Leader. 8. To follow an agreed approach, and use strategies documented in the support plan, working in collaboration with the client’s family, case manager, team leader and any other professionals when required. 9. To undertake training and supervision as agreed by the Case Manager. 10. To ensure client confidentiality in all matters relating to the client. 11. To provide assistance and support as directed by the Case Manager/Team Leader, and to be responsible to the client via the Case Manager/Team Leader. 12. Any other appropriate and reasonable task in relation to the employment as agreed with the client and Case Manager. 13. To provide daily ongoing support/prompts to assist the client to undertake personal care and domestic activities. 14. To accompany the client on holidays and weekends away when required. Applicant Personal Specifications Essential Qualifications/Experience You must be able to follow instructions and guidance as set out in a support plan. You must be able to communicate with your colleagues and Team Leader effectively. You must have the ability to work on your own, with a client. You must have a full UK driving licence and be a confident driver. You must be prepared to have business class insurance on your own vehicle if you have the use of one for work. Desirable experience To have a knowledge or level of understanding around Brain Injury To have experience of working in a community setting or people’s own homes. Desirable Skills and Aptitudes 1. You should have a non – judgmental approach with the ability to see things from other peoples’ perspectives and be respectful of their lifestyle choices. 2. A calm communication style with clear pronunciation when speaking. 3. An understanding of the ‘enabling approach’ and the ability to judge when direction needs to be offered to the client. 4. A sense of humour is vital, along with an understanding of appropriate boundaries, with a mature, confident, and professional approach. 5. To be able to integrate an understanding of brain injury - displaying empathy but with a non-patronising approach. 6. To display an understanding that the workplace is also the client’s home. 7. Have flexibility and a willingness to step in and help the client and family when the situation demands it. 8. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of people involved with the client. 9. To be self motivated and able to work unsupervised with the client. 10. Be conscientiousness, have good timekeeping and good record keeping, using paper documentation and/or a laptop. 11. Ability to identify and manage potential risks, to safeguard the client. 12. The ability to use initiative and adapt to different situations and/or learn new skills. Pay and Conditions You will be employed by the client via their Deputy. You will be line managed by the Team Leader on a day-to-day basis and overall, by the Case Manager on behalf of the Deputy. The contract allows for 5.6 weeks paid leave and 2 weeks paid sick leave. You will receive initial and on-going training, plus regular supervision from the Team leader and Case Manager. What next?
