Health, Safety and Environmental Officer


An excellent opportunity has arisen for a proactive and passionate individual to join us in the capacity of Health, Safety and Environmental Officer. The purpose of this role is to promote a positive health and safety culture in the workplace at SEM. You will be responsible using your expert knowledge to control risks to ensure that our business meets current safety standards and employees comply with our safety policies and practices. This is a standalone role, reporting into the HR Manager and we will be relying upon your expert knowledge to be the competent person on site. Responsibilities include: * Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards and safe ways of working. Working closely with managers to ensure that working practices are both safe and in conjunction with current health and safety legislation * Carrying out detailed risk assessments and regular reviews to consider ways in which risks can be reduced. * Establishing, developing and maintaining a positive health and safety culture as well as acting as a site wellbeing champion where employees are signposted to the appropriate support channels * Supporting with the implementation and delivery of the environmental action plan and strategy (ISO accreditation) * Carrying out planned and ad-hoc audits/regular site checks in line with KPI’s * Producing material for and leading in-house safety related training * Maintaining and reporting on health and safety and environmental related data via a variety of platforms * Recording and investigating of incidents and accidents together with suggestions and implementation of corrective actions * Keeping up to date with latest developments in health and safety legislation and environmental initiatives * Supporting and overseeing the safe installation of equipment on site * Manage and organise the safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances on site * Advising on a range of specialist areas e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases. * Liaising with external contractors to schedule servicing, maintenance and statutory inspections Our perfect Health, Safety and Environmental Officer would have: * In-depth, working knowledge of current health, safety and environmental practices and legislation. * Experience of working within a similar role, ideally within an engineering manufacturing environment * Proven ability to deliver value added results and make informed decisions * A well organised and efficient approach with the ability to interpret processes and improve their effectiveness * The ability to work to own initiative with a self-managed and focussed approach * The ability to prioritise and meet agreed deadlines/targets and deliver results; thrives under pressure * Good written and verbal communication skills; proficient in MS Office packages. * A confident approach to presenting and delivering health and safety related training Qualifications NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) is essential. The hours you would work Monday to Thursday, 7.30am-4.15pm. Friday, 7.30am-12.30pm or 4.15pm
