Design Engineer


An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic Design Engineer to join our busy team of 15 who create bespoke storage designs for our customers who we manufacture and install a range of storage products for. From turnkey designs to supporting our network of approved storage resellers every day is a different challenge. The Whittan group is the market leading supplier of pallet racking, shelving, mezzanine and lockers in the UK and we are proud of the length of service of many of our team as they grow and develop their careers with us. Selling via a number of sales channels with market leading brands we design, manufacture and install storage solutions for commercial and industrial environments in the UK and Europe. The ideal candidate could have design or technical experience in construction, steel fabrication, pallet racking, shelving or mezzanine or perhaps a graduate with a mechanical engineering degree looking for a long term employment opportunity. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training to understand the complex detail of our products and how best to create a design. This could be a great development opportunity for someone with previous Engineering and CAD experience. The role will involve designing storage solutions to meet our customer’s needs using a variety of components we manufacture or externally source. Working with the sales team to create the optimum solution using our inhouse design tools and CAD this is an ideal role for someone looking to develop a career in bespoke engineering solutions. There are periodic opportunities to visit site and see your creations come to life, whilst working alongside our project management and installation teams when specifying the exacting detail required for each component. Key responsibilities: To produce high quality drawings and layouts using CAD packages. Evaluate technical solutions to meet customer requirements Provide prompt and accurate design costings Adhering to CDM regulations and SEMA/FEM codes of practise. Produce accurate bill of materials for system entry. Liaise with suppliers and internal support functions to obtain quotations for components, Installation, and plant. Follow design processes and procedures. Provide technical assistance to all internal & external stakeholders Ensure all design risks are identified and designed out using through design risk assessment and residual risks. Reduce cost of failure through accurate design. Required experience/skills/qualifications: Confident communicator. Keen interest in designing storage solutions. Drawing software (AutoCAD packages). Competent IT user including Word, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook. Ability to prioritise tasks effectively. Good attention to detail. Minimum GCSE A-C or 9-4 in English, Science and Maths. Desirable experience/skills: Racking and storage industry knowledge including pallet racking, shelving and mezzanine. Good understanding of CDM 2015 regulations. Revit BIM modelling experience.
