Plant Operative


Job Purpose

To work as a member of a team to deliver a best value, customer-focussed service throughout Leicestershire and occasionally surrounding counties, working flexibly, efficiently and effectively to maintain highways and footpaths, construct new roadways and structures, and effect solutions to environmental events in accordance with statutory requirements.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To operate heavy plant, such as tractors, road menders, multi-hog and other horticultural machinery

2. To work safely on the live public highway, observing Traffic Management requirements at all times

3. To work on a range of highways activities such as grass, verge and hedgerow cutting, small to medium patching works and other general maintenance activities.

4. To maintain training records in accordance with the requirements of the personal development process.

5. To comply with all authority and departmental policies, management systems, procedures and working practices (especially in relation to Health and Safety procedures).

6. Any other reasonable duties which may be allocated from time to time by management commensurate with the responsibilities of the post

Qualifications

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills sufficient to interpret and follow works instructions

Or

Adequately developed coping mechanisms to enable progression

  • CSCS H&S Test Pass Certificate
  • Skilled Road-worker Trades Test Assessment
  • NVQ level 2 in Highway Maintenance or similar

Experience

  • Extensive knowledge of safe working practices using plant and machinery
  • Ability to drive a range of heavy plant, and/or other horticultural equipment
  • New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) Accreditation
  • Accredited and relevant H&S Training Records and Certification (e.g. NPORS plant operator, IOSH working safely, Appointed Person, etc).
  • Valid driving licence and able to provide own transport.
  • Willing and able to travel to other work based sites
  • Prepared to work in adverse weather & site (e.g. rain, cold, heat, dust, dirt, uneven ground etc.).
  • An understanding of, and commitment to Equal Opportunities, and the ability to apply this to all situations.
